We wanted to rent a 4x4 vehicle because this is essential for travel in Oman. When searching for a car, the only filter option was SUV. It did not specifically mention if it was a 4x4 or not. When looking at the details of the rental, it did not say anywhere if the car was 4x4 or not. I had to use good faith and assume that an SUV was 4x4. When we got to the rental counter, it turns out that our reservation was for a ‘mid-size SUV’ but this vehicle was not 4 wheel drive. If we wanted to upgrade to a 4WD they wanted us to pay an extra $1,300 which was more than double the total cost of the rental. Although the rental car company was a little misleading, I think the issue mainly stemmed from Kayak’s poor search criteria and limited information about the vehicle on the rental page. An additional example of this is that the car rental had limited miles. This was buried in the rental details and it did not say how many miles a day we got. I did not find this out until I was at the rental counter at which point it was too late to do anything about it.
